The village of Tintagel is situated on the north coast of Cornwall. Famed for its association with the legendary King Arthur, the knights of the round table and the wizard Merlin you’ll find it hard not to take yourself back to times of myth and legend when you spot the ruins of the 12th-century castle dominating the headland. The castle attracts sightseers from around the world and is managed by English Heritage. It can be visited for a fee and is well worth it for any history buffs or lovers of the Arthurian legend. Below the castle is castle beach (or Castle Cove), great for bathing in the summer months and here you will also find the famous Merlin’s Cave which you’ll easily identify by the carving of his face at the cave’s entrance. The beach is mainly pebble and shingle and has a number of other caves to explore.
If you’re keen for more Arthurian adventures, why not pop into King Arthur’s Halls, the only building in the world dedicated to the legend. Here you can learn the story of Arthur and his knights with the narrated guide and see the great round table and granite throne whilst marvelling at the 72 beautiful stained-glass windows. The venue is used for concerts, weddings and has also been used for film and television programs. It can be visited by the public 6 days a week (check website for details).
The village houses a number of gift shops and places to eat, ample car parking and a visitors’ centre. You’ll also come across Tintagel Old Post Office in the centre of the village. An excellent example of a medieval building located in pretty gardens. This is a National Trust property and entry requires a fee.
Take time out to visit St Nectan’s Glen to enjoy the pretty woodland walk along the meandering river which culminates in a beautiful 60-foot waterfall that cascades through a hole in the rocks. As well as being rewarded by this spectacular scene (have your camera’s ready….. and wellies if you want to get up close for the best shots!) there is a tea room with indoor and outdoor seating.
The King Arthur’s Arms is a friendly family run pub with rooms. Expect traditional home cooked food and a warm welcome.
Camelot Castle Hotel occupies an enviable position on the coastline overlooking the sea and village. Once a Victorian private residence the building is now a privately owned hotel with its own restaurant and bar.
