Bound for Cornwall for the best places to visit, eat, stay, and shop

St Ives

For many years St Ives has been well known as a popular holiday spot for British holidaymakers looking for a vacation a little closer to home. With so much available in a relatively small town it’s not surprising. Beautiful beaches with crystal clear water, a plethora of eating and drinking options and a buzzing art scene make St Ives a great choice for a visit as well as a longer stay.

Food

There are so many options, so please excuse this small selection and make sure you do your own research before heading on your holiday to St Ives. In the busy summer months, it’s recommended that you book in advance at most restaurants to avoid spending your evening with a sandwich down by the harbour (not that there’s anything wrong with that!).

For something a little special, check out the Porthminster Beach Café. With Mediterranean and Asian influences on its menu and fresh local ingredients coupled with panoramic views over St Ives Bay an excellent experience is almost guaranteed.

The Firehouse Bar and Grill also provides a great view as well as fabulous food. With a menu that includes fresh Cornish seafood, pizzas and of course excellent chargrilled steaks as well as vegetarian options there should be something for everyone. Why not just visit for a cocktail or drink at the bar which boasts the widest selection of speciality gins in town you should find something to whet your whistle.

If you’re after a little more history and old world atmosphere during your meal, the Sloop Inn, located on the Wharf is a great option. A proper old fashioned ‘boozer’ with low ceilings and beams and a great selection of local Cornish ales and a surprisingly varied menu across it’s 3 separate eating areas (including a pleasant terrace lounge bar).

Beaches

St Ives boasts a large number of beaches in and around the town. There are no less than five within walking distance of the town centre, so it shouldn’t be hard to find the perfect place to enjoy a sunbathe, get your toes wet and take in the surprisingly turquoise waters lapping against the golden sand.

Porthminster beach is regularly awarded a blue flag for cleanliness. This long beach is great for families with lifeguard patrols and all the facilities you would expect from a busy tourist beach, including a café and toilets and nearby large car park.

Porthgwidden beach is a well sheltered stretch of sand. Also offering good facilities as well as quintessential British beach huts which can be hired.

Potrthmeor beach can be found near the Tate St Ives. This is a very popular beach and considered one of the best surfing locations in the nearby area. The Porthmeor Café is a great place to get some grub and refuel after a heavy morning’s wave catching. There’s also a surf school at the beach for anyone looking to learn. The beach also included rockpools which are a popular way to entertain the kids.

Nearby Attractions

Tate St Ives is a must for anyone visiting the town. A large gallery of modern art, hosting a number of exhibitions throughout the year and exhibiting works by modern British artists as well as artists from St Ives. Celebrating the contribution that St Ives artists have made to the art world.

Just a short walk from the Tate will take you to the home of one of the best known sculptors of the 20th century. The Barbara Hepworth Museum and sculpture garden contains a large collection of sculptures created by the world renowned artist as well as providing an intimate insight into her life.
